9 Website Mistakes That Are Costing Your Small Business Leads
You can have a nice-looking website and still get few calls, bookings, or form submissions. Often the issue isn't traffic. It's that visitors don't know what to do next, or they don't trust what they see. Here are the most common small business website mistakes and how to fix them.
1. A headline that doesn't say what you do
Visitors decide within seconds whether they're in the right place. Your top headline should say what you offer, who it's for, and where. "Welcome to our website" doesn't.
2. No clear call to action
Every page needs one main next step, such as "Call now," "Book a free consultation," or "Request a quote." Make the button obvious and repeat it down the page.
3. Contact information that's hard to find
Put your phone number, email, and address in the header or footer on every page. If you serve a local area, say so.
4. A site that's slow or breaks on mobile
Most visitors are on phones. Test your site on one. If text is tiny, buttons are hard to tap, or pages take a long time to load, people leave. Compress large images and check your speed with Google's PageSpeed Insights.
5. No proof that you're trustworthy
Add real testimonials, reviews, client logos, certifications, awards, and case studies. Named, specific proof is more persuasive than general claims.
6. Vague claims with no evidence
"We get great results" doesn't convince anyone. Replace it with specifics: what you did, for whom, and what changed.
7. One page trying to do everything
Give each service its own page. This helps visitors find what they need and helps each page rank for its own search, like "web design in [town]."
8. Missing page titles, descriptions, and image alt text
These basic SEO settings tell Google and AI tools what each page is about. Write a unique title and description for every page, and describe each image in the alt text.
9. No way to capture visitors who aren't ready yet
Most visitors won't buy on the first visit. Offer something low-commitment, such as a free checklist, a quote request, or an email signup.
A quick self-audit
Open your homepage and ask: Can a stranger tell what I do in five seconds? Is there one clear next step? Can they find my phone number? Is there proof? If the answer to any is no, start there.
